Box Office Results: “Aquaman” King for Third Weekend

It was another easy win for Aquaman this past weekend, as the film topped Batman v Superman to become the highest grossing DCEU film worldwide. Meanwhile, Sony’s Escape Room, the lone new release, overperformed.

With $30.5m, Aquaman easily held on to the top spot for the third consecutive weekend. The superhero film has now grossed $260m domestically and is closing in on $1 billion worldwide, as it continues to impress in its overseas performance. A domestic finish around $330m is likely, and it will probably be the second highest grossing DCEU film domestically, trailing just Wonder Woman.

In something of an upset, Escape Room managed to take second place for the weekend, while most prognosticators expected a fifth place finish, and even I bullishly expected a third  place result. The PG-13 horror film brought in $18m over its first three days, more than double its $9m production budget. And, it currently holds the crown as the highest grossing film of 2019. Overall this is a solid win and a good start to the year for Sony, and further proves that low budget horror is perhaps the safest and most profitable genre there is right now.

Mary Poppins Returns had to give up the runner up position it has held on to for the past two weeks as it floated down to a thrid place finish, with a worse drop than expected. The sequel dropped 44% for a $15.7m weekend and $138m to date.

In a close race, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse defeated Bumblebee and took fourth place with $13.01m and $133.8m to date. Bumblebee was close behind with a $12.78m weekend and $97.1m total.

Next weekend sees the release of the sequel A Dog’s Way Home, action film Replicas, the long delayed remake The Upside, and the expansion of On the Basis of Sex.
